Amalgamations that formed the 2nd Battalion

 

3rd Regiment of Foot ( The Buffs )

Raised in 1572 as the Thomas Morgan’s company for service in the Netherlands. It formed the Holland Regiment in 1655, becoming the Prince George of Denmark Regiment in 1669. Nicknamed "The Buffs" they were affiliated in 1782 to East Kent and became known as
The Buffs ( East Kent Regiment ). The Battalions were amalgamated in 1935 leaving just the first battalion in service, King George V made them a royal regiment and they became The first battalion The Buffs ( Royal East Kent Regiment ). Amalgamated with the first battalion The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment in 1961, and thereafter were known as The Queens Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment.

 

 

50th Regiment of Foot ( Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment )

The 50th of Foot or 7th Marines existed from 1741 to 1748. The 50th Regiment of Foot which became The Queen’s Own Regiment was raised in January 1756 as the 52nd Foot and was renumbered the 50th in December 1756. In 1782 it received the subsidiary title of West Kent Regiment of Foot. This was changed to the 50th (or Duke of Clarence’s) Regiment in 1827, and when the Duke came to the throne as William IV, he directed that the Regiment be styled the 50th (The Queen’s Own). The Regiment amalgamated with the 97th or the Earl of Ulster’s Regiment of Foot in 1881 forming the first and second battalions of The Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). In 1961 the Regiment amalgamated with the first battalion to form The Queen’s Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment.

 

97th Regiment of Foot ( Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment )

The Regiment was raised in 1824 and became the 97th or Earl of Ulster’s Regiment of Foot in 1826. In 1881 it was amalgamated with the 50th (or Queen’s Own) Regiment to become the second battalion The Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). In 1961 the Regiment amalgamated with the first battalion The Buffs ( Royal East Kent Regiment ) to become the first battalion The Queen’s Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment

 


 

Queen’s Own Buffs ( The Royal Kent Regiment )

The Regiment which was one of four in the Home Counties Brigade, was formed on the 1st March 1961, as a result of the amalgamation of The Buffs ( The Royal East Kent Regiment )
and The Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, whose splendid records go back nearly four hundred years.

 


 

2nd Battalion The Queens Regiment ( Queens Own Buffs )

Formed 31 December 1966 by redesignation of The 1st Battalion The Queen's Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment. The subtitle ( Queens Own Buffs ) was omitted 1 July 1968.
